Cities: Skylines II, developer Colossal Order’s anticipated sequel sim, has released another Feature Highlights gameplay trailer, this time focusing on game progression. This includes milestones, expansion permits, development points and more.

Cities: Skylines II is slated to release for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on October 24th, 2023. You can watch today’s new trailer for game progression on Cities: Skylines’ official YouTube channel:

Today’s trailer feels significantly broader than previous feature highlights, which pinpointed a variety of specific mechanics like last week’s episode about Economy and Production, or the complex Electricity and Water features. However, game progression is crucial in such an expansive game, and can easily determine if the pacing feels balanced or not.

The new feature highlight explains that players will have twenty milestones to reach. These milestones will unlock monetary rewards, expansion permits, and development points. You’ll have to earn expansion points, or XP, both passively and actively to achieve milestones.

This is a smart way to continuously reward players for making smart decisions and a robust city. But earning active XP through investments will ensure that players don’t feel discouraged from taking the risks that will make their city more distinguishable.

Expansion permits will allow you to lay new tiles with specific attributes. Development points will be used for City Services features, which were explained in full back in July.

Because city services have a tree that can be leveled up with development points, the devs have essentially made another form of currency for players to manage. But that also gives you more flexibility to design the world as you see fit.

This should create a nice ebb and flow of building towards milestones, then slowly growing with them, so that changes are gradual and less overwhelming.
