POPUCOM, a casual fantasy platformer with color-based obstacles from developer Hypergryph and publisher Gryph Frontier, has just been announced with an official trailer. It features both cinematics and gameplay, showcasing the heroes and basic mechanics.
POPUCOM has not confirmed an exact release date yet, but you can wishlist now. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. You can watch today’s announcement trailer on the game’s official YouTube channel:
While many are already comparing POPUCOM to the likes of Splatoon because of its color-based shooting, it’s also akin to a 3D version of traditional color-matching mobile games. The genre is considerably tired, and it often needs some serious twists to stand out, as in the puzzle indie Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine that launched last June.
Fortunately, POPUCOM does cleverly elaborate on classic color-matching in a wide range of obstacles and enemies. It avoids the time-wasting redundancy of the genre. Although accessibility might be a problem, POPUCOM seems to make the most of its colorful premise.
Also, the game’s official Steam page mentions that there will be puzzles, as well as a variety of companions with special abilities to help you solve them. Incorporating more puzzles would definitely make POPUCOM more distinct, though today’s trailer does hint that the game probably won’t get too challenging.
It’s very clear that POPUCOM was designed for younger audiences to enjoy this one too. It promises a swift pace, upbeat music, and supports online or local co-op for families to play together. The Steam page also strongly encourages players to work as a team.
So, it’s a little surprising this one isn’t due to release on all major platforms, and ideally those ports will roll out later on.
