Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine, an upcoming action puzzle indie from Headup Development and Headup Publishing, will officially launch later this month on June 22nd, 2023.
For PC users, it will be available via Steam, GOG, or the Epic Games Store. It will also release on the Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. You can watch the new release date trailer for Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine on publisher Thunderful Games’ YouTube channel:
Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is a spin-off of the Super Meat Boy series, which has lost a lot of hype since the core franchise sequel Super Meat Boy Forever. That game ultimately disappointed a lot of fans with its auto-run mechanic.
However, Super Meat Boy Forever was recently ported to mobile devices, where auto-run was more suitable and successful. And it seems very likely that Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine would be a better fit in that scene, too, despite releasing on PC and all major consoles.
It’s a small-scale game with a bloody twist on the tile matching genre. This should work as a fine mobile distraction on the Nintendo Switch, and today’s trailer boasts that players will have over a hundred stages to complete. The sheer volume of content is pretty impressive.
Most longtime fans are probably still hoping for a return to form in the core series’ platforming. Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is a new direction for the series, but it veers into a tired genre.
Still, it might serve as a great entry point for newcomers to discover the delightfully bizarre tone and humor of the franchise. The cinematic intro that was revealed in April was a good laugh, but today’s frantic gameplay trailer will be more accessible.
