How 2 Escape, an upcoming cooperative escape sim from developer Breakfirst Games and publisher Just For Games, will officially launch on August 31st, 2023. The announcement came with a new trailer today, revealing the key premise and gameplay mechanics.
How 2 Escape will be available on PC via Steam, where you can wishlist the game and play a demo now. It will also launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. You can watch today’s release date trailer on the Just For Games YouTube channel:
There’s some rather weak voice acting in today’s teaser, but it doesn’t do the gimmick justice. How 2 Escape has a lot of familiar escape room elements, with basic symbols and tools. The puzzles simply don’t feel nearly as compelling or inventive as the likes of Escape Academy, which just released new DLC today.
But the novelty of How 2 Escape’s asymmetrical teamwork and devices may be enough to interest fans of the genre. The gameplay will be divided across two different devices using a free downloadable app, so How 2 Escape mainly aims to test communication skills.
Cooperative puzzle games can result in some fun chaos, but it can also lead players to positively annoy each other. Games like Portal 2 and Human Fall Flat smartly injected a sense of humor to keep things entertaining, but players operated in the same space.
Ideally, How 2 Escape will find the right difficulty, while balancing enough value for each player to contribute. At the very least, the trailer implies that How 2 Escape will make the most of its premise, and the mystery of the antagonist hints at some interesting lore. Also, the visuals smartly use a cartoonish, stylized look that is very forgiving for indie games.
