Bungie first announced Destiny 2’s new Guardian Games with all of the details last week, and now it’s officially launched today with a brand-new overview trailer. The return of the Guardian Games will be free for all players, featuring Supremacy, Crucible matchmaking, Strike Rivals, and more. Players will get to compete for their favorite class through May 23rd, 2023.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. You can watch the full Guardian Games 2023 trailer on the official Destiny 2 YouTube channel:
Bungie has always been successful with PvP content, so the Guardian Games are always a welcome and cozy addition. It tends to feel more streamlined and strategic than some of the basic adventures in the core gameplay, which makes for a shorter and punchier experience. PvP and differing classes also create more unpredictability than encounters designed by the devs.
In fact, players who would not ordinarily be so interested in the RPG elements have often been turned into fans by previous Guardian Games. The variety of LTMs simply make the game more accessible.
It’s also fun to see how the Destiny classes engage in this kind of objective-based gameplay. Although, some fans have been frustrated about the balancing between them, which can sometimes result in some modes playing more smoothly than others.
The cosmetic Ornaments and rewards are fine enough, and the new Legendary Strand Scout Rifle is a standout. But it’s the events (and bragging rights) that are the real prize, with a race to win a consecutive gold. Fortunately, Strike scoring is returning. Despite some minor flaws, it does balance out the gameplay, and it’s an interesting way to reward strong skills.
