Pepper Grinder, an upcoming indie action platformer has just been announced with a new reveal trailer as part of Nintendo’s “Indie World Showcase” livestream. Pepper Grinder is expected to launch sometime in 2023, but no release window has been confirmed yet. It will be available on the Nintendo Switch and PC.
You can watch the devs’ full trailer on Devolver Digital’s official YouTube channel:
Devolver Digital has established themselves as a reliable studio with tremendous personality. They also tend to include a genuinely entertaining sense of humor. That’s proven in their upcoming game Stick it to the Stickman, which was announced last September, and successfully parodies the office and corporate language in very clever ways.
Devolver Digital has also seen enormous success with Cult of the Lamb, which blew up enough to warrant exclusive physical copies that launched back in August. The game was also teased in Nintendo’s last Indie World Showcase from a few months ago, proving that Pepper Grinder could very well become another hidden gem and runaway hit for the indie studio.
Pepper Grinder’s trailer shows off a clever use of momentum, as players must use the protagonist’s drill to wade through terrain and overcome various obstacles. There’s a promise for breakneck pacing, intriguing puzzles, and some truly brilliant music which really fuels the tone.
Overall, Pepper Grinder feels like a perfect little love letter to retro platformers while incorporating mechanics from modern classics. As such, fans immediately drew comparisons to both Drill Dozer, a similar platformer from the early thousands, and even Ori and the Will of the Wisps. What’s certain is that Pepper Grinder clearly has the potential to live up to those titles.
