Disaster Band, a cooperative rhythm game from developer PRODUKTIVKELLER Studios and publisher SunDust, has released a new patch today. The update features new Erhu and Cat instruments, the new song “Brother John”, Steam workshop integration and more.
Disaster Band, which finds the humor in your mistakes, is available now on PC. You can watch the full update trailer on the PRODUKTIVKELLER Studios YouTube channel here:
Since Disaster Band first launched back in December 2022, the game has definitely resonated with fans. The game encourages players to create excruciating music for laughs, thriving on your failure. In that way, it’s almost like a musical Mystery Science Theater, and may even promote a positive way of thinking. Or it’s just a simple party game, but it mostly succeeds at both, either way.
The only real complaint from fans has mainly been the severe lack of content. This was supposed to be balanced out by the Steam workshop support, which has fortunately been fully integrated in today’s patch. It’ll be much easier to discover and download music. Party games rely on a swift pace, so this should really help build some new interest.
The erhu is a beautiful Chinese instrument with undertones of melancholy, and often used for serene music. Its addition here would make a hugely entertaining contrast, but the truth of its sound isn’t captured very well.
Similarly, the cat instrument is a hilarious idea, but doesn’t seem quite right. Cats can muster a cute meow or alarming screech, but this update sounds more like a human impression. Then again, that might be enough to spice up the chaos.
At the very least, new instruments and songs to utterly obliterate are welcome. Disaster Band is still very enjoyable, and deserves more content and support. The patch notes on Disaster Band’s Steam page add that “the next content serving” is coming soon.
