Disney Speedstorm, the upcoming kart racing game featuring Disney and Pixar’s biggest characters, just released a new trailer explaining how the Crew mechanics will work. This included some of the familiar faces fans can expect, as well as the effect they’ll have on the track.

A new release date still hasn’t been confirmed since Disney Speedstorm was delayed last November, citing the need to add more content. Here’s the full Crew trailer from Disney Speedstorm’s YouTube channel:

Developer and publisher Gameloft has released a series of small updates like this, as Disney Speedstorm attempts to retain interest after the big delay, elaborating on minute features like victory animations. However small, these updates are pretty interesting, as each feature is compared to the high bar set by Mario Kart, a franchise that doesn’t even need to bother with new games anymore.

Adding a Crew system was a smart move for Disney Speedstorm. It allows the roster to drastically expand, without actually needing to create more playable characters. A similar tactic has been used in games like Nickelodeon Kart Racers, which has certainly improved over time, but still struggles to shed its bargain bin feeling.

Disney Speedstorm will also let players assemble a Crew, and each member will adjust your kart stats. New Crew members can be unlocked in-game. Given how many Mulan characters are teased in today’s trailer, it looks like each IP will get a fair variety of choices.

Also, it’s always nice to have more freedom to tinker around with your kart stats. Mario Kart mostly relies on the kart components themselves, and the preset karts can sometimes have wide stat gaps. Ideally, Disney Speedstorm will let players to simply adjust the characters they like, rather than resorting to characters with an ideal weight in order to win.
