Divine Knockout, the Super Mario Bros-like platformer and fighting indie from Red Beard Games, has just revealed a new teaser for a new map called Spirit Shrine. It’s the first arena from the Japanese pantheon, featuring tides that impact battles directly. Spirit Shrine is scheduled to roll out on December 20th, 2022. Here’s the brief teaser from the official Divine Knockout YouTube channel:

Just yesterday, Divine Knockout revealed an extensive first look at Zeus and his full ability kit in a Twitch livestream. The reveal turned out to be a little controversial, due to Zeus’ staggering power, but it

The devs are clearly ramping up content, and although adding new characters to master are entertaining for any hero-based game, a new arena will definitely be a breath of fresh air.

Games with a single game mode, or just a few, demand additions like Spirit Shrine to thrive. It’s surprising how many other free-to-play games have struggled in that regard, relying almost entirely on cosmetics or recycled content. Even AAA titles like Halo Infinite have phoned in their launch, waiting well afterwards to add proper gameplay options.

Meanwhile, Divine Knockout is delivering a brand-new map, which already has lots of potential, despite the very brief trailer. The art design is very charming, and the cultural inspirations look gorgeous. Also, the description in today’s trailer for Spirit Shrine teases that all the tides surrounding the map can “wreck havoc during the height of battle”.

Interactive stages in fighting games are always very satisfying, as seen in Mortal Kombat or Injustice. They add more immersion and unpredictability, since you’re probably focusing on your battle.

Divine Knockout may be a smaller game, which borrows heavily from publisher Hi Rez Studios’ similar title Smite, but there’s still a lot of creativity and promise.
