Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, an epic return to the classic beat ’em up series from developer Secret Base and publisher Modus Games, has released a new gameplay overview trailer. The trailer also coincides with pre-orders opening today, according to an official tweet.
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is slated to launch on July 27th, 2023. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and current or last-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. You can watch today’s new gameplay overview trailer on the Modus Games YouTube channel:
Today’s overview trailer does a good job of selling all of the new mechanics, which are going to be crucial for those unfamiliar with the series. For example, a lot of weight is put into the SP mechanic. When SP is full, players can use a variety of abilities.
Players can decide how and when to spend their abilities during each level, and how to spend their cash after each victory. Along with the notion that enemies you don’t confront will naturally escalate, it’s clear that the devs were interested in providing more freedom from modern ideas in order to justify returning to the franchise.
These features are going to make the game more accessible for new players. They’ll also ensure the gameplay doesn’t rely entirely on brand or nostalgia. Also, the majority of the content that fans can unlock will include new playable characters, which is a smart way to improve replayability without losing the beloved simplicity of the series.
It looks like the devs wisely took a page from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, which recently announced the Dimension Shellshock DLC. Thus far, it’s shown as much potential to succeed.
