In a recent interview with Sherdog, EA Sports UFC 5 producer Raman Bassi revealed that the team at EA Sports UFC constantly changes fighter attributes and movesets after every UFC event. This is done to ensure that the game is as accurate and realistic as possible.
During the interview, Bassi explained that the team takes a holistic approach. They consider factors like fighter stats, movesets, overall gameplay, and feedback from the EA Sports UFC Design Council. For those who don’t know the UFC Design Council is made up of a diverse group of UFC, MMA, and gaming enthusiasts.
Bassi also said that the team considers the evolution of MMA and UFC over time when rating fighters. For example, they might rate a past version of a fighter differently than their current version, based on how the sport has changed or how well the fighter did in the last event. Using these numbers and the UFC Design Council, they can make accurate updates to stats. To quote Bassi:
“They will provide us essential feedback on whether fighters like Dustin Poirier truly feel like themselves, or if any adjustments are needed in terms of the fighters movesets, idles, perks or attributes. Our development team maintains an ongoing dialogue, holding weekly discussions to determine attribute upgrades, decreases or to introduce moveset adjustments after every UFC event.”

For newer fighters, the team may consider factors such as unproven attributes and potential. They also take into account feedback from fighters and fans. Bassi gave the example of Bruce Buffer, who was introduced to the game in UFC 3. Buffer sent the development team videos of himself kicking a martial arts movie star in order to show them how good he was in his prime.
The team used this information to create a more accurate representation of Buffer’s fighting style in the game. Bassi also talked about Dana White, who is included in EA Sports UFC 5 as a playable character. White is a businessman, and his main focus is on building the brand of UFC, not fighting. However, he also has a background in boxing, and the team wanted to ensure that he was represented accurately in the game.
Through things like this, the team continues to improve how they rate fighters and rate their performance.
