As reported by Variety, Universal Pictures has declared the simultaneous release of the Blumhouse-produced adaptation of the renowned horror video game series on October 27th, 2023. The movie will premiere in theaters and on the studio’s streaming service (Peacock).
The film’s development dates back to 2015 when Warner Bros. Pictures announced the acquisition of the Five Nights at Freddy’s film rights. Initially, Roy Lee, David Katzenberg, and Seth Grahame-Smith were set to produce the movie, with the intention of working closely with the series creator, Scott Cawthon. Later that year, Gil Kenan signed on to direct and co-write the adaptation with Tyler Burton Smith.
In March 2017, Cawthon revealed that Blumhouse Productions would be the new production company for the movie. By May, producer Jason Blum expressed his enthusiasm and commitment to working with Cawthon on the project. However, in June, Kenan announced that he was no longer directing the film after Warner Bros. Pictures’ withdrawal.
By February 2018, it was disclosed that Chris Columbus would direct, write, and produce the film alongside Blum and Cawthon. In August of the same year, Cawthon announced the completion of the movie’s first script draft, which would center on the events of the original game. Despite initial plans for a 2020 release, the script was later scrapped, causing further delays.
In September 2021, it was revealed that Columbus was no longer involved with the project, which was still in active development. In August 2022, Blum announced that Jim Henson’s Creature Shop would create the film’s animatronics. By October, Emma Tammi was named as the new director and co-writer, collaborating with Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback.
In December 2022, Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard were added to the cast in undisclosed roles. Later, YouTuber Dawko unveiled that Hutcherson would play security guard Mike Schmidt, while Lillard would portray the main antagonist, William Afton. Mary Stuart Masterson and Piper Rubio also joined the cast, with Masterson as an undisclosed female villain and Rubio as Schmidt’s younger sister, Abby. In March 2023, Kat Conner Sterling and Elizabeth Lail were confirmed to be part of the movie’s cast.
As the release date approaches, anticipation for the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie continues to grow. The film’s journey from a popular video game to a full-fledged movie adaptation has been a long one, but fans can finally look forward to experiencing the terrifying world of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria on the big screen and in the comfort of their homes through Peacock’s streaming service.
