Flame Keeper, an upcoming indie roguelite from developer Kautki Cave and publisher Untold Tales, has just revealed that it will officially launch next week on March 17th, 2023. It will be available on Nintendo Switch, as well as PC via Steam and the Epic Game Store. You can watch the full release date trailer on Untold Tales’ YouTube channel here:
Since Flame Keeper was first announced in December 2022, the devs have released quite a lot of footage and details. They even showed off more than twenty minutes of gameplay in an extended look last month. While it may have spoiled a bit much, all of the marketing has reinforced just how inventive and charming this little indie should be.
The art design and general tone are very cute, which is reinforced by the narration and soundtrack in today’s trailer. But this definitely contrasts the potential difficulty level, as a roguelite where health must be carefully managed as a resource.
There’s a small sense of humor behind every enemy, setting, and mechanic that just feels innately appealing. The combat all seems very flashy, so the game should have a pretty quick pace that fits the genre nicely.
The mechanics look fairly simple though, even with traditional skill upgrades. Ideally, the unique biomes that players can explore will introduce enough gameplay variety to avoid redundant button mashing. There’s potential to satisfy both fans of the best roguelites, as well as old school iso adventures.
It’s a little surprising that the devs nearly waited until the last minute for a concrete release date. Hopefully, curious indie fans will still check this one out, because its success would mean even more content from Kautki Cave.
