Fortnite fans are disappointed by the Summer Escape 2023 event, same as last year

Following a less-than-stellar reaction last year, players are once again unhappy with the Fortnite summer event.

It’s been six years since Fortnite launched its first iteration, with developer Epic Games evolving the title in monumental ways and celebrating the passing seasons with fans. However, following the release of Fortnite‘s Summer Escape 2023 event, it seems like players are less than thrilled with the cosmetics and minor changes to the game at the start of this event.

It’s only been going for a few days so far, but many data miners accessed the files and were able to tell fans about what was coming in the near future. This included Summer Escape 2023 rewards like new cosmetics inspired by well-known Fortnite content creator D3NNI, a return of the ice cream back bling, and a slight change to one of the forest areas. It’s still early in the event and files are encrypted still, but players are unhappy nonetheless.

As per usual, they’ve taken to social media like Reddit and Twitter to voice frustrations with the summer event, with many commenting on the little content and new mechanics added.

On the other hand, many people seem to be enjoying the Summer Meowscles quests, with some users meme-ing the objective that asks players to get eliminated nine times. Some experienced dismay when they realized that this was related to cats supposedly having nine lives.

Most of the conversation has been about how Epic hasn’t created a holiday event that stands up to what players got in the three years before last year’s event. One user made a video showing their reaction to the updates using different gifs.

There is a certain trend among the Fortnite community to prefer stuff that came earlier in the game, so it’s unclear how big of an effect that has on this specific trend. That being said, there does seem to be less content and new features than even last year so far. There could be more in the files that Epic is saving, but it seems like much of the community has made up their minds.

It should be noted that Fortnite‘s Summer update in the last two years has coincided with the Epic Summer Break, a period where the majority of Epic Game’s staff takes off for a little while on vacation. This update could be scaled back in the last two years to give players something while the developer is taking some time off.
