Fragile Existence, an upcoming sci-fi RTS game from solo developer Fragile Continuum and publisher Hooded Horse, has just released a brand-new trailer featuring key gameplay mechanics. Fragile Existence still hasn’t announced a release window, but it’s available to wishlist on Steam and GOG. Here’s the full trailer revealed today:

Only yesterday, publisher Hooded Horse released a new trailer for the turn-based strategy sequel Xenonauts 2, which bears some similarities. They’re both survival, sci-fi, and strategy games about protecting Earth from mysterious attackers through tactical research and management.

However, Fragile Existence delivers very different genres, and has a compelling approach. Its cosmic scope is significantly larger, with outer space expeditions and dangers. In fact, today’s trailer makes it very clear that gameplay set in space will function very differently from the traditional RTS mechanics set on planets. And yet, both of them directly affect each other, which is a clever way of blending two games in one.

Surprisingly, Fragile Existence’s official Steam page also mentions that players will have access to a Planet Editor, System Editor, and Scenario Editor. It’s an unusual kind of freedom that will definitely improve replay value and foster a strong community. It really makes the project feel more ambitious, especially for a solo dev.

Fragile Continuum is run by a UK-based solo developer, Lee Harris, who has openly communicated with curious sci-fi fans about Fragile Existence’s full development process. However, they don’t have any other games for comparison. But according to Fragile Continuum’s official site, Harris is a physics graduate, and that clearly influenced a lot of authenticity, complexity, and creativity to Fragile Existence.

There are plenty of sci-fi RTS games out there, and Fragile Existence does seem more ambitious than its budget would allow. But conceptually, it has extraordinary potential, so hopefully this signals a bright future for Harris.
