Frictional Games, the developer and publisher behind the classic Amnesia horror series, has just announced that Steam Workshop will now be enabled for Amnesia: The Dark Descent, according to a new tweet posted today. Regular mods can now be easily published and downloaded via Steam, finally providing a more convenient space for the remarkable creativity of longtime fans.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent released on PC over a decade ago, and received console ports for PlayStation and Xbox a few years ago.
However, fans have regularly invented a variety of impressive mods and stories even after all this time. So, it’s a nice gesture that the devs have chosen to support this degree of loyalty and skill, though it could have arrived sooner instead of coinciding with another installment.
The first-person horror series will continue with Amnesia: The Bunker, which was recently delayed but will finally launch next week on June 6th, 2023. Further, Microsoft just announced earlier this week that Amnesia: The Bunker would join the Xbox Game Pass. The series hardly requires the risk-free support of a subscription service, but it will still benefit from a lot of newcomers.
Ahead of launch, Frictional Games uploaded a gameplay overview on their YouTube channel, breaking down the difficulties and key mechanics:
Amnesia: The Bunker has quite a lot in common with The Dark Descent, and continues to impose its overwhelming sense of dread with impeccable skill. The developers’ superb sound effects and expertly designed levels allow mystery and fear to fester in the best ways.
Now that a new game will renew interest in previous installments, it’ll be neat to see how Amnesia: The Bunker inspires fresh modding with the Steam Workshop. The lore is certainly rich enough for plenty more to come.
