FRONT MISSION 2: Remake, the highly anticipated update of the classic tactical RPG, has finally announced that the new Nintendo Switch release date will be October 5th, 2023.
The remake was originally expected to launch months ago before it was delayed. The developers, Storm Trident, cited the need to add functionalities and complete enough testing. You can watch today’s new release date announcement trailer on publisher Forever Entertainment’s YouTube channel:
Previously, Forever Entertainment has also published Front Mission 1st: Remake, which generally received positive reviews on PC, despite some more recent mixed opinions.
So, expectations for the sequel’s remake will be pretty high. Today’s new teaser is very brief, and mainly shows off the graphics fans can expect, rather than tallying up improvements. Instead, those are reserved for the trailer description, but most of the new features do concentrate on the visuals.
There will be a new Free Camera option to zoom in on the Wanzers, which are admittedly a big draw for the game. The remake also offers effects enhancements and modernized battle scenes. The Nintendo product page specifically mentions new coloring and camouflage options.
Aside from supporting several new languages, Front Mission 2: Remake doesn’t seem to focus on quality-of-life. Mostly, it’s content with polishing up the original, including features like a renewed soundtrack.
It seems like sort of a missed opportunity, but fans will certainly look forward to Front Mission 2 finally getting a release outside of Japan. The game smartly chooses a lane, fully understanding the appeal of mecha action, enough to justify its relatively straightforward missions and plot.
It’s a little surprising that Front Mission 2: Remake isn’t joining 1st on PC, so ideally, there will be announcements for ports later on. The original remains a staple of the genre and definitely deserves a wider release.
