Halo Infinite has a new game mode in the form of Attrition, and if you’re unfamiliar with the mode, that’s because it’s a new spin on the classic Slayer mode. Like the Fracture: Tenrai event’s Fiesta mode, Attrition will take center stage as the main game mode for event-based challenges tied to the Cyber Showdown. In order to make the most of those challenges, you’ll need to know how the new game mode works.
How Attrition works in Halo Infinite
At its foundation, Attrition is a Slayer game mode where two teams of four fight against each other simply to get kills. However, the goal isn’t to reach a score of 50 like the classic mode. Instead, each side is given eight lives that are shared between the entire team. Once those lives are gone, you’re given one more life to try to turn the tide of the fight.

If you go down in this phase of the Attrition match, an orb will be left on your Spartan’s body that teammates can activate to revive you. There is no limit on revives or time, so in theory, the match can go on for a long time, but pulling off a revive is typically risky. When one team does finally get wiped out, the other side will get a point. The first team that gets to two points will win the game entirely.

As for the rules of the sandbox in Attrition, they mirror that of a casual quickplay match. Casual weapon spawns are in effect, such as the Skewer and the Cindershot. You will also spawn with the classic MA40 Assault Rifle and the MK50 Sidekick Pistol. If you can find the spawns on the map you’re playing, the Battle Rifle and the Shock Rifle remain some of the best options for wall weapons in a given match.
Considering that Attrition is tied to the Cyber Showdown event right now, it’s entirely possible that the mode will disappear as soon as the event ends. In that case, you will have until February 1, 2022, to participate in the new Slayer-based mode. For anyone who wants to get as many rewards as possible, be sure to play through the event challenges tied to Attrition in Halo Infinite.
