In a recent announcement, developers Blackbird Interactive and Gearbox Publishing relayed the news of the Homeworld 3 delay via the game’s official Twitter account. The game’s release has been postponed to February 2024, stating the additional time will be used to refine and polish the game to meet the franchise’s high standards.

The developers tweeted, “Our primary goal is to deliver a Homeworld experience that lives up to the standards set by its predecessors and is worthy of this series’ incredible legacy. Homeworld 3 is shaping up to be exactly that, but in order to fully realize that vision we need more time to refine and polish the game. We deeply appreciate your passion and dedication to this game, and we are working hard to get Homeworld 3 to you as soon as we can.”

Homeworld 3 is touted to bring a unique, tactical, and visually striking science fiction real-time strategy experience, is a game where strategic freedom plays a major role. One notable feature includes the use of hulking space derelicts, referred to as megaliths, that introduce 3D terrain into the classic Homeworld battlespace.

These megaliths can be used to strategize attacks by funneling enemies into ambushes or concealing your fleet from powerful adversaries. The game also introduces environmental hazards like particle storms and asteroid fields that pose additional challenges to even seasoned commanders. Moreover, Homeworld 3’s fully simulated ballistics necessitate careful planning, making line of sight and cover critical strategic factors in each battle.

The game’s artwork, which combines Homeworld’s timeless style with modern technology, presents a sense of scale, destruction, and wonder. Ships fly in formation amidst stars and nebulae, casting silhouettes over the remnants of ancient civilizations. The visual spectacle of battles is heightened by vivid depictions of explosions rippling across the hulls of ships.

The narrative of Homeworld 3 continues 100 years after Karan S’Jet unlocked a vast hyperspace gate network, opening up the entire galaxy for trade and exploration. However, a sinister entity known as the anomaly threatens this peace, swallowing gates and planets. Karan’s successor, Imogen S’Jet, is the key to uncovering the mystery threatening the galaxy’s future.

Homeworld 3 also debuts a new multiplayer mode, allowing one or two commanders to engage in a randomized series of fleet combat challenges. This mode merges the traditional RTS gameplay of Homeworld with a roguelike structure, where players manage their fleet strength across battles and unlock powers with each victory.
