Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 – Turbocharged, the anticipated racing sequel from developer and publisher Milestone, has released a second chapter of the official blog “Inside the Track”. This update explains more about environments and terrain, from the development process to in-game effects.

Most of today’s new blog is focused on the artistic development of different environments and terrain, and how the devs concentrated on “fun, nostalgia, and entertainment”.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Backyard

While behind-the-scenes info can be interesting for longtime fans, the biggest reveal was how the environments and terrain would affect player creations.

It turns out that “terrains are not parts that you can add or remove as you please”. This means that players will have to work around intrinsic terrain features when they build their own tracks. Players can deal with this creatively by selecting where they build their tracks, and using the track editor tools like modules. For example, players can potentially cover the grass when building in the Backyard.

This approach is similar to Halo: Reach’s Forge World, which is from quite a while ago. Some fans may be disappointed, especially compared to the freedom of Trackmania, which is still going strong and recently rolled out a crossover with Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

However, player creations aren’t necessarily the central feature of a Hot Wheels game, which has plenty of its own IP collaborations like the recently revealed Fast & Furious trailer.

It’s clear that the devs were very thoughtful in designing their settings, and that they should still be flexible enough for players to dream up some neat tracks. Hopefully, more will be revealed about the track editor soon.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 – Turbocharged is coming to PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox on October 19th, 2023.
