Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical seems like quite an oddity, and proudly celebrates that nature in today’s trailer. It genuinely has the chance to thrive on it, too, thanks to the remarkable cast and crew that were assembled for this. In fact, the trailer title lists these names outright, and that could certainly be enough for some fans to invest.
Stray Gods is clearly more of a choose-your-own-adventure, but the setting and characters should be worth exploring. Characters from Greek mythology are always larger-than-life, but they have very human flaws, which keeps them more relatable and compelling.
Mixing familiar gods with modern-day people isn’t totally novel. However, blending that approach with legitimately thoughtful musical numbers and comedy is a terrific idea. It also happens to play to the cast and crew’s strengths.
For example, Felicia Day has recently been featured as one of the new villains in Mystery Science Theater 3000. Austin Wintory famously worked on Journey, and more recently composed for games like Aliens: Fireteam Elite.
Stray Gods’ unusual blend of genres is also quite rare in the gaming scene. The official Steam page notes how Stray Gods aims to bridge the gap between these genres, and it seems just ambitious enough to achieve that. It helps that the art design is absolutely gorgeous, with vibrant colors and careful lighting, so the game will also be fun to watch.
