Mrs. Cat Between Worlds, a space cat 2D platformer from publisher Ratalaika Games, has just announced that it will launch tomorrow. It will be available on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation 4, and even PlayStation 5. Here’s the tweet from Ratalaika Games’ official feed:
Ratalaika Games has a habit of announcing launch dates at the last minute, such as last December’s Panda Punch reveal or November’s Intrepid Izzy announcement. But waiting a single day is pretty surprising, and it probably doesn’t instill much confidence from curious platform fans.
Mrs. Cat Between Worlds could stand to have more imaginative level design, especially with such a cute protagonist and a fun setting. Neptune and Mars both have a lot of personality, and they don’t really seem to come through in the existing trailers or screenshots. The mechanics of the game also look a little uninspired, and they’re accompanied by familiar obstacles.
This is a shame, since there will be at least 100 levels to complete, and Mrs. Cat Between Worlds does have a strong theme. It leans into a playful tone and the main character looks adorable.
Also, according to Nintendo’s product page for the game, there will be various degrees of gravity, which should be a fun selling point. If Mrs. Cat Between Worlds can at least capture the feeling of those environments in the movement, that would be a neat little way to add some immersion and personality. It could also result in some more interesting obstacles.
However, it does seem like Mrs. Cat Between Worlds is pretty much relying on the audience’s general love for cats. To be fair, that has been more than enough for some games, and the recent success of hits like Stray will have animal lovers seeking out anything with a cat. Their agility, climbing, and general cleverness does make them ideal protagonists for a platformer.
Still, platformer fans can only hope for the best. For the small price tag, it’s probably worth a shot for most. You can read more about upcoming indie games and platformers by following our news section!
