Inkulinati, the indie medieval strategy game from developer Yaza Games and publisher Daedalic Entertainment, has released its first update and patch notes. Inkulinati recently launched and is available in Early Access on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. It’s also on the Xbox Game Pass. Here’s the big update announcement from Yaza Games’ official Twitter feed:

This update was accompanied by a surprise collaboration with Pentiment, Obsidian Entertainment’s story-driven game that similarly features “living illustrations”. The crossover will allow players to use artist Andreas Maler in Journey mode and Duels, according to a follow-up tweet:

Inkulinati has a very unique, tabletop tone that is reflected in its mechanics and art design. As a result, its gameplay may not be very accessible for some. Alongside some technical hiccups and a muddy tutorial, it might feel like there’s a steep learning curve. But the game hasn’t fully launched yet, and it deserves the buzz it’s found.

The content itself is certainly imaginative, and the sense of humor sparkles. It’s amusing instead of raucous, letting the ideas speak for themselves instead of overtly hammering the comedy.

There’s no denying the charm of Inkulinati’s premise, and the art style makes the most of it with oddball animations and battles that are probably as amusing now as they would have been in medieval ages.

Today’s Francis and Friends update introduces a new master and army of beasts, more battlefields, and even a new Battlefield object. It’s a decent amount of content, especially for an update that so closely follows the Early Access launch.

But the official update post also mentions that there was some careful rebalancing, which will probably be the highlight. There are multiple difficulty levels to choose from, but they weren’t necessarily as accurate as they could have been.
