To begin with, host Ben Brode has never been more in his element, and the genuine enthusiasm has always been delightful. The overall style of today’s presentation has a terrific budget and fun humor. There are plenty of amusing, broad references to a beloved era’s culture, language and entertainment.

It really helps set the mood for some neat surprises. Fans noted that Nebula’s cost was mixed up in the video, but her ability is an interesting way to wrangle your opponent in early game, similar to Lizard, who begins with a ceiling. Fortunately, although Nebula’s fellow Guardians have good synergy with her, they should still function separately.

High Evolutionary was a real highlight today. It allows the developers to revise original cards with abilities they could have had, and were probably considered in early stages of development. The new card also activates at the start of the game, so each of those “hidden” abilities totally transform the context and appeal of low-level cards.

The locations are appropriately thematic, but not quite as revolutionary as one might have hoped given the cosmic reaches of Guardians of the Galaxy. Milano is somewhat interesting though, since Turn 5 is the only opportunity to sneak in. But overall, the tie-in with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 looks like a great time, with some small but creative twists ahead.
