Pokémon Horizons: The Series, the brand-new anime that will replace the beloved story of Ash and Pikachu, has just revealed its first official trailer.
While the trailer leaves a release window open to 2023 for Western audiences, the fresh series is slated to premiere in Japan with an hour-long special on April 14th, 2023. You can watch today’s new trailer on the official Pokémon YouTube channel here:
The previous teaser for Pokémon Horizons: The Series didn’t have a title just yet, and simply broke down each of the main characters.
The new title and trailer are a delight, with the same kind of attitude and colorful world fans would expect. The performances are bubbly, the imagery is playful, and Paldea should have more than enough sights and history to hold up a new series.
The next main characters both have objects that give their storylines some kind of destiny though. This is similar to the more recent games like Sword and Shield, whereas Ash and Pikachu felt like everyday trainers that could represent anyone.
But the mystery behind these characters should also drive the plot a little more, and ultimately give a different kind of flavor to the pacing or themes. Hopefully, the series can make the most of their elaborate premise and still keep an emphasis on characterization. Fans love the original anime because of its iconic characters.
Today’s trailer seems concerned with easing the fanbase into another era of Pokémon anime. A lot of the language involves the future, including “horizons”. The trailer even opens with the protagonist worried about taking their first step into a different world. But the tone is still charming as ever, and following bittersweet goodbyes, every Pokémon fan hopes for the best in this new adventure.
