Hello Games has released the Omega update for No Man’s Sky, bringing a significant overhaul to the Expeditions mode alongside several new core features. The update, teased earlier by cryptic tweets from studio founder Sean Murray, went live recently and is available for all players across platforms.
The most notable change lies in the Expeditions mode, which receives a “complete overhaul,” according to Hello Games. Players can now directly start Expeditions from the Space Anomaly, offering more flexibility and allowing them to carry over specific resources and upgrades from their main save for the first time. The Omega Expedition itself, the 12th in the series, introduces new challenges and rewards like the Atlas Headshield, Atlas Fight Pack, Atlas Scepter, and the Starborn Runner starship.
To be clear, this specific Expedition is currently undergoing a trial period in the experimental branch to address technical hurdles, particularly in base building.
Beyond Expeditions, the Omega update introduces a variety of new gameplay elements. Players can now engage in thrilling space battles with Pirate Freighters and, upon defeating them, claim these formidable vessels as their own. This opens up exciting possibilities for pirate-themed adventures and unique ship customization. Additionally, the update expands on-planet missions with procedurally generated quests offered by alien lifeforms. These quests are tailored to the alien’s specific locale, climate, and personality, offering more diverse and immersive experiences.
The Omega update marks another significant step forward for No Man’s Sky, continuing the game’s impressive post-launch support and dedication to expanding its ever-evolving universe. However, there’s still the feeling that “omega” means end. We have a long report on why and what it could mean, but we’re thinking that No Man’s Sky is nearing its end. We hope for more confirmation soon, but the title alludes to “I am the alpha and the omega, the beginning and end.”
