Starbreeze Entertainment releases figures on Payday 3's peak player count during launch weekend, while also addressing challenges with the game's matchmaking infrastructure.

During its launch weekend, Payday 3 achieved a peak of 218,250 concurrent players across all platforms and a peak of 1,347,510 unique players for the day. Starbreeze Nebula, the platform hosting the game, has accumulated 3,794,172 registered users.

Despite this initial surge of players, Payday 3’s matchmaking infrastructure has encountered several technical challenges. The software experienced an error, making it incapable of managing the large volume of incoming players. This issue led to an unrecoverable situation for Starbreeze’s third-party matchmaking partner.

To address the problem, Starbreeze and its partner rolled out a new version of the matchmaking server software across all regions, which led to performance enhancements. However, a subsequent software update introduced by the partner during late Sunday brought new instability to the matchmaking system. Efforts are ongoing to stabilize and improve Payday 3’s online systems.

Interestingly, these specific issues did not appear during the game’s Technical Betas or Early Access phase. According to Starbreeze, this is due to the unique circumstances of a rapid increase in user numbers and load-balancing requirements that were not present in the earlier stages. The company is currently assessing its options both for the short-term and long-term. Short-term efforts are concentrated on enhancing the immediate player experience. In the longer term, Starbreeze is considering a new partnership for matchmaking services and is exploring ways to make Payday 3 less reliant on online systems.

Tobias Sjögren, CEO of Starbreeze Entertainment, issued a statement acknowledging the matchmaking challenges. He expressed disappointment regarding the issues players faced during the launch weekend. However, he also emphasized the company’s confidence in the core product and quality of Payday 3, as supported by available metrics. Sjögren stated that they have a significant amount of consistent work ahead to regain the community’s trust.
