PlayStation announced via Twitter that they would cover several indie games every fifteen minutes today, and they began with a blog post about the upcoming retro JRPG Sea of Stars.
Here’s the official tweet from PlayStation’s feed, which includes a brief trailer for some of the gameplay mechanics:
The anticipated turn-based RPG from Sabotage Studio was recently delayed until 2023 just last week, and the new trailer for today’s announcement concludes without a new release date.
The devs released a lengthy, official blog post that did reveal more details about how the combat system is going to work, leaving plenty to break down.
Sea of Stars turn-based mechanics
It’s now been confirmed that Sea of Stars will allow players to focus on decision-making by removing time bars, which is a fitting throwback to the genre’s table-top foundations.
The game will also reinforce this tactical approach by giving all six characters a unique kit of four different abilities. That gives players an opportunity to create any number of combinations between the characters. You’ll also be able to freely swap between any character without losing turns.
Also, there are no random encounters against enemies. So, it becomes crucial for fans to carefully study every unique enemy until they discover a way to win.
Sea of Stars will also feature “locks” for enemies that have special attacks. These attacks can be weakened or even cancelled by destroying the locks. Each lock is vulnerable to different types of damage.
You can increase your own power by using careful timing, combining moves, and using natural mana that builds up with every normal attack.
All of these modern mechanics, combined with a retro style, are a great way to use nostalgia without relying on it altogether. So far, the fans are pleased, and patiently waiting for the new release date.
