Backbeat, an upcoming strategy game where players lead a band through time-based puzzles, will officially launch on PlayStation “later this winter” according to a new trailer. The trailer also hints that it will be available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
A demo is now available on the PlayStation Store, as well as Steam, but the latter requires a controller to play. The Steam page still lists a Q1 2023 release date for PC. Here’s the full trailer from PlayStation, featuring lots of music and gameplay:
Sadly, today’s trailer is really just a re-release of Backbeat’s original sing-along trailer, which teased the Steam demo as far back as September 2021. A line was changed at the end to include the PlayStation platform.
However, although it’s lost its novelty, it does remain a creative and amusing trailer nonetheless. It also happens to perfectly summarize the mechanics and tone of the game, which looks very musical and quirky in the best ways possible.
Backbeat is also set in the 90’s, apparently, though that doesn’t quite come through aside from the video store. The story and puzzles will probably delve into that a little further.
It was always a little odd that the Steam demo doesn’t support mouse and key, so the console announcement today wasn’t much of a surprise. Still, Backbeat feels more like a charming PC game than a traditional console puzzler. But that may simply be due to its friendly art design.
The puzzles involve time control, which the trailer doesn’t make totally clear. Players will need to follow four totally different paths of time in order to advance. It’s a promising hook, though familiar. Either way, it’s clear that developer and publisher Ichigoichie added a lot of style.
