In a new announcement, Project Zomboid is set to enhance its farming mechanism and introduce small animals in a forthcoming update, which was revealed in a recent blog post on Steam.
One of the most significant aspects of this update is the complete overhaul of the farming system. Currently, the game developers are working on enhancing the interface and interactions associated with farming. A key aspect of this development includes the introduction of new plant sprites, representative of varying plant states, which will significantly enrich the player feedback mechanism.
In the previous versions, the game had a limited number of plant sprites for individual growth stages and some generic sprites for trampled plants. However, with this update, the farming mechanics are expanding to cover a much broader range of plant states. This revamp will see the addition of approximately 600 sprites that will represent 15 different crops and 8 herbs in various conditions. These conditions include plants that are unhealthy due to disease or lack of water, dying or completely dead plants, and plants that are trampled or crushed.
Moreover, the farming revamp will introduce growing seasons, which can be toggled in the sandbox settings. Most plants will now have a specific planting season, with certain months providing additional yields. Plants planted out of season are likely to wither and die. This new dynamic will bring a greater realism to the farming system, making the game experience more immersive and intricate. The knowledge of growing seasons can be acquired through different avenues within the game; farmer characters will inherently know them, characters with the gardener trait will be aware of most, and the remaining can be learned from reading seed packets and special farming handbooks.
In addition to farming improvements, the introduction of small animals into the game will offer a more diverse gameplay environment. This new feature will bring a different layer of realism and engagement to the game, with the behaviour of animals such as rabbits governed by unique rulesets. This inclusion of animals will also bring additional elements to the game such as animal waste, which could be utilized for various purposes.
Furthermore, the map expansion continues to progress, aided by the recent addition of Dirk to the map team. This new area will potentially be released alongside the 42nd update or incorporated into its beta versions, providing players with a broader environment to explore.
