Bilkins’ Folly, a swashbuckling adventure and puzzle game from indie developer Webbysoft and publisher Armor Games Studios, will officially launch on October 2nd, 2023. It was announced with a new overview trailer, which breaks down the premise and key mechanics.
Bilkins’ Folly will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. There’s currently no word on an Xbox port. You can watch today’s release date trailer on the Armor Games Studios YouTube channel:
Hopefully, Bilkins’ Folly will be ported to Xbox later on. It would likely thrive on the Game Pass, which is rolling out the new Game Pass Core system later this week. Bilkins’ Folly has a very friendly theme, art design, and mood, though it doesn’t rely on cute factor alone.
The story centers on treasure hunter Percy Bilkins, who is searching for his missing mother and grandfather, and ends up shipwrecked with his dog Drayton. There’s a terrific sense of adventure in the premise and gameplay mechanics, which encourage players to explore and build relationships with the NPCs, including Drayton.
Bilkins’ Folly’s official Steam page mentions there will be some obligatory RPG elements like fishing, minigames, and socializing. But it’s still a great way to build out the world, and there does seem to be plenty of thoughtful lore.
Players should appreciate there is also an emphasis on puzzle-solving. Puzzles are a classic tool in adventure tales like Tomb Raider. As you bond more with Drayton, he develops new skills to help you through certain puzzles, some of which you’ll need to return to later.
Today’s new trailer also showcases some really neat map interaction. The Steam page elaborates, explaining that players can customize their map by drawing lines and placing icons as they track down treasure. It’s another touch of old school, Goonies or Indiana Jones-style adventuring, though Bilkins’ Folly doesn’t feel rote in its trailers.
