RedDeerGames, the team behind UnderDungeon and nOS: New Operating System, has just revealed plans for an ambitious Indie Spring Spree event. Throughout this spring, RedDeerGames plans to launch a new indie game every Friday, with “a bigger release” at the end of each month. These games will launch on the Nintendo eShop at a special price.
RedDeerGames has made it a habit to publish strange little indies at a very swift pace. So, today’s announcement to increase indie launches was a surprise, but also a welcome one. It’s clear from the new Indie Spring Spree event trailer that RedDeerGames’ ambition has pushed them to broaden their horizons, including glimpses of more traditional indies.
Some of the team’s recently released titles include nPaint from February, or Sport & Fun: Swimming in January, both of which cater to very young players. Most of their games end up flying under the radar, though nOS: New Operating System did generate some buzz with its wickedly clever and misleading premise.
Instead, today saw the announcement of The Adventures of Poppe. It was briefly teased in the spree event trailer, but also got its own dedicated trailer on the RedDeerGames YouTube channel here:
Although it looks relatively simple, The Adventures of Poppe clearly has a lot more effort in its level and art design, and inches closer to the standards that were set by UnderDungeon.
The announcement trailer shows off some basic platforming that plays around with scale in a fun way. The success of games like It Takes Two and Grounded have made miniature adventures a little more popular lately. The Adventures of Poppe may not have the budget of those titles, but it does look like a charming dose of nostalgia.
It’ll be a delight to see RedDeerGames invest in even more indies every month, and the prospect of “bigger” releases is definitely intriguing.
