If you’ve ever been scared that Roblox might shutdown for some reason in the past, then know that there’s just about zero chance of that happening! David Baszucki, a.k.a. Builderman, who is the Founder and CEO of Roblox, has gone over some of his thoughts about how things changed in 2020.
The big news is that Roblox now reaches over 180 countries and is available in 11 different languages. The platform averaged 31.1 million DAUs (Daily Active Users), in the first three quarters of 2020. Not only that, users spent 22.2 billion hours of engagement in Roblox! Those are some incredible numbers, which show just how large Roblox is at the moment.
Now, those numbers in themselves are extremely impressive, but Roblox did not stop there. They’ve also been on a hiring spree! Check out these details from the post:
We hired nearly 400 new employees in 2020, growing our organization to 979 people—79% of whom are in product and engineering roles. We’ve also doubled down on leveraging the precious resource of our engineering teams by optimizing workflow processes. Today, more than 50% of all engineers at Roblox use our new highly scalable micro-services architecture, BEDEV2, which successfully performed a 1.5M QPS load test. We’ve seen much faster code-to-production cycles to BEDEV2 and continue to focus on that transition. Our data engineering team also reduced our general data latency to one hour or less, thereby greatly improving the team’s ability to make quick data-informed decisions.

Roblox is pushing forward in the looks department as well. If you were lucky enough to get to watch Lil Nas X’s concert in-game, then you got to see the first true demonstration of the new skinned mesh technology that is going to be a big part of Roblox in the future. While there is some charm in the blocked shapes of the characters in Roblox, it is going to be important that the platform pushes the boundaries of what it can do. Giving the developers more ability to create visually impactive games will only make Roblox better in the long run!
I highly recommend reading the post yourself. There’s a lot to look forward to if you’re a Roblox fan, so make sure to keep an eye out for more amazing new features!
