Pax Dei, an upcoming medieval-themed and social MMO from developer and publisher Mainframe Industries, just released new Alpha footage of in-game building. The teasers include both a day and night scene, showcasing many of the structures and items, as well as some scenic backdrops.
Pax Dei has not confirmed a release date. According to an official FAQ, it was built with PC in mind, but has plans to roll out on “cloud gaming platforms” too. You can watch the new building gameplay clips on the Pax Dei YouTube channel here:
Pax Dei was first announced early last month, releasing a pair of videos with around ten minutes of extensive details. Both interviews and gameplay were shown, revealing a surprising amount of information.
By comparison, it’s a little strange that today’s teasers were quiet, and deliberately hide any of the actual building mechanics. Ordinarily, one would expect “building” clips to show how players can build. Instead, the Alpha footage keeps your point of view as a bystander, watching structures rise from nothing.
While this may disappoint some viewers, the approach was probably deliberate. The devs may be hoping to indicate the tone of Pax Dei, emphasizing the shared experience that seems so central to the game. It can be peaceful and quiet, with a soothing and mystical soundtrack.
Also, there’s a decent variety of styles and items to choose from. It’s nice that players won’t share typical construction highlighters, so that guests will simply see new buildings spring up. It helps the immersion.
Mostly, today’s teasers are a showcase of how remarkably gorgeous and lifelike the Unreal Engine 5 build has mustered. Most MMOs suffer visually, just to accommodate technical limitations. Pax Dei has revealed some lighting, textures, and environments that already look extraordinary in their unfinished state.
