This new event focuses on the mysterious disappearance of “Merry” Merrick, a classic character that was first introduced in “The Hungering Deep” update. Merrick recently helped Belle and rebuilt the Golden Sands Outpost, but now he’s been gone for several days.

Players must speak with Larinna to trigger the new adventure. Then, you’ll need to pursue clues throughout Stephen’s Spoils and beyond.

These clues can be found by reuniting with old friends and enemies alike, in order to unmask an assassin and their motivations. Also, it seems that Merrick’s absence will only lead to a larger conspiracy. Successfully completing the event will earn players an exclusive Title and cosmetic reward.

Compared to “Lost Sands” and “The Shrouded Deep”, the fifth adventure feels a bit less creative and leans towards some redundant beats.

A lot of the joy from the game comes from stories that could only happen in Sea of Thieves, and this plot doesn’t promise quite as much as a Megalodon narrative. Instead, it almost feels like a Scooby Doo gimmick. But hopefully, future stories will focus on the fantastic or the weird a bit more.

Still, fans have mostly shown a positive response to this update, and at least the Merrick detective work is an organic way to invite more exploration and worldbuilding. After all, there have also been some fun world changes and other new content in the latest update.
