Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, an isometric stealth and strategy game featuring cursed pirates, has just been revealed with its first gameplay trailer.
Developed by Mimimi Games, an indie studio based in Germany, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew will release sometime this year. A release window hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it will be available on PC and next-gen Xbox or PlayStation consoles.
Here’s the full trailer from Mimimi Games’ YouTube channel, which includes an extensive overview of the gameplay, story, mechanics and more:
The release of this gameplay and overview trailer actually coincided with a cinematic trailer on PlayStation’s YouTube channel, which is far less informative but equally entertaining. For a full idea of the tone and setting of Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, you should have a look at that trailer too:
Mimimi Games is probably best known for Desperados III, which released in 2020, and the studio’s gameplay trailer explains that fans should expect to notice its influence.
Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew may seem a little inaccessible for those who don’t enjoy iso games, but it does mesh well with tactical gameplay.
Also, the supernatural elements gave the devs enough freedom to elaborate on the pirate genre in an interesting way, which is sorely needed. Pirates are trending, between Curse of the Sea Rats launching this April, Pirate’s Dynasty due in Q3 2023, and the recent launch of Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale.
Fortunately, magic helps Shadow Gambit open more strategic paths. Tactical gameplay is only truly satisfying when players have the freedom to get creative and discover their own solutions. Manipulating time has always been a fun mechanic, since the early days of Blinx.
The artwork is also pretty stylish, especially for an iso game, where the environments and character designs can sometimes be lost.
