With life simulation games gaining popularity, new titles like Paralives and Life by You are challenging The Sims franchise. Rod Humble, former head of EA’s The Sims and current director of Life by You, offers a unique perspective on the growing appeal of this genre.
Humble thinks life simulation games attract players by providing a very inclusive experience, unlike traditional games with specific characters and storylines. He says that in traditional titles, the written story can make players feel left out based on differences between their identities and those of the characters. On the other hand, life sims allow players to make stories based on their own real-life experiences and points of view.
While it may seem like the game just puts you in a world, that’s not what’s happening. A bland world where nothing is going on feels bland, and more like a dollhouse, less like a game. The world has to have conflict, relationships, and situations built in that players need to react to. Doing this also comes with the responsibility to build the world so players can feel welcomed. The emphasis on inclusivity presents a significant challenge for developers. Creating the vast complexities of life requires ambitious and complex game design.
“I think people who don’t play life simulators perhaps don’t understand that these are also the most complex RPGs ever written, as well as being some of the most complex crafting games ever written, as well as being the most complex behavioral AI systems ever written. But the reason I think that they are so popular is that even though they’re that complex, they are relatable, and you don’t need a tutorial.”

Life by You provides a wide range of features. Players can modify various aspects, from redesigning entire towns to adjusting small details of character interactions, essentially creating scripted conversations to influence their virtual environment. This high level of player control enables a relatable and user-friendly experience, even with the technical intricacy typical of life simulation games.
Developers Paradox Tectonic have placed a strong emphasis on customizability and modding potential in Life by You. The game’s simplified visuals have been intentionally designed to inspire modders to expand upon the game’s features without strict adherence to a specific art style.
