Software Inc. is one of the meta-gaming titles where players will play a computer program as they work to build a business off of creating other programs. The game was a success on Steam, allowing solo developer Kenneth Larsen to dedicate time to it, leading to the announcement of an upcoming multiplayer mode.
In a post on Mastodon, Kenneth Larson detailed an upcoming multiplayer feature that will allow up to four players to start on the edges of the map. From that point, players will be competing for the same markets, plots, stocks, deals, and everything else that determines success. It is expected to be playable via Steam networks or LAN for players who own the DRM-free version.
This multiplayer is kind of similar to games like Civilization in that players are often competing for the same resources, but it’s also new. Players’ development and how they take advantage of opportunities will be the difference between success and defeat, with those who don’t use their time and money wisely going bankrupt.
This new game mode will definitely make Software Inc. more of an immersive title, giving players an idea of how competitive it can be to create programs when everyone has the tools. Larsen doesn’t give any timeline on when the update will release, instead saying it’s “very early in development,” but it is playable in its current form.
He also shares an image of the main menu with a Multiplayer icon available, but there doesn’t seem to be any more information outside of that. Players who have an account should follow Larsen to get the most updated information about the title.
