Forspoken, an upcoming action RPG featuring magic and parkour, has just released another trailer right before the game launches later this month on January 24th, 2023. Developed by Luminous Productions, it’ll be available on PC and PlayStation 5, making it one of a few AAA next-gen exclusives. Here’s the brand-new trailer from publisher Square Enix:
Forspoken hasn’t been met with a lot of interest from fans, likely because everything looks so familiar. Despite a decent premise, there still isn’t a clear personality or direction for the story and its world just yet. Many of the mechanics also appear to be fairly traditional.
Forspoken isn’t necessarily doing anything wrong, but it does generally come off a little uninspired, even after releasing eleven minutes of gameplay last month, as well as a playable demo. There was a lot of uncertainty and concern from the beginning, so marketing has had an uphill battle. It’s sort of having a hard time justifying itself.
Today’s cinematic does a decent job of establishing a character arc for the protagonist, and ties in her home world a little more to remind players of the story’s hook. Also, the most compelling thing about the game thus far is its parkour map traversal. So, tying in a “running” theme from the story with the character’s movement is a smart approach.
Unfortunately, the new trailer probably won’t be enough to change anyone’s mind. But Forspoken’s settings and art design look absolutely stunning. They will surely benefit from next-gen capabilities, such as extraordinary graphics and haptic feedback.
And fantasy parkour is a fun idea, since magic opens the door to an endless supply of unique movement and environments. By all accounts, this was a highlight for players who have tried out the demo. Ideally, the campaign will expand on that mechanic.
