SteamWorld, the acclaimed indie variety series from publisher Thunderful Games, has just revealed several key announcements in a new “Special Broadcast” video.

This includes the reveal of SteamWorld Build, an upcoming 3D city builder with mining mechanics. An exact release window hasn’t been confirmed, but it’s expected this year on PC and all platforms. A new, free demo is available today on Steam. The devs also revealed that three additional SteamWorld titles are currently in development.

For future updates, “SteamWorld Telegraph” was announced. It will be a community-focused show including the latest news and updates, gameplay, and interviews with developers or guests. You can watch today’s reveal trailer for SteamWorld Build here:

The SteamWorld series has continued to surprise fans with new genres for over a decade, with a throughline strategy, action, and shared lore. This unpredictability led to a lot of fun speculation since today’s big update was announced last week, and it turned out to be very rewarding.

SteamWorld Build, the sixth mainline entry, officially expands the series into a totally new genre. There are countless city builders, but SteamWorld Build promises to distinguish itself.

Presented with a brief Western live-action sketch, SteamWorld Build showcased a new gameplay trailer featuring loads of interesting customization and resource mechanics. It adds the flavor of SteamWorld Dig with classic city builders, and today’s footage hints that it should balance them exactly as hoped. The city building and mining will both directly affect each other.

It also happens to be a 3D game, which will definitely be more accessible for newcomers to the SteamWorld universe. This could easily become one of the devs team’s greatest hits, so hopefully there’ll be news on the other three games in-progress soon. It’s terrific to see how ambitious the artists have become with Thunderful’s resources.
