Summum Aeterna, developer and publisher Aeternum Game Studios’ recent roguelite spin on Aeterna Noctis, has just launched their latest Early Access update “Legacy of the Arcana”. The update was just revealed yesterday, and is now accompanied by a brand-new trailer and full patch notes that break down all of the details.
Summum Aeterna is expected to launch in September 2023. According to the patch notes from the official Steam page, the game will simultaneously be available on PC, Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles, so no fans will have to wait on a port.
You can watch the full Legacy of the Arcana update on the Aeternum Game Studios YouTube channel here, which elaborates on key changes with corresponding gameplay:
Naturally, the highlight of today’s Early Access update is the titular Legacy of the Arcane influence. These cards operate differently, and that’s the true novelty. However thematic, some of the card effects feel a little uninspired, like Judgment.
But there are some creative gems like Wizard, which will turn enemies into cattle, as showcased in today’s trailer. And the devs carefully introduced a better variety of effects overall that will make the game feel more unpredictable, which of course largely impacts replay value.
Perhaps the most overlooked role the new Arcane cards play is expanding the mythology of the game. Summum Aeterna always felt like part of a larger universe, because the devs have smartly wielded their lore and visuals to effectively connect ideas and themes.
The Board of Champions is an unexpected addition. While it should help build more of a community in the fanbase, it feels just a bit out of place. Maybe the worldwide leaderboard will feel more playful, but it’ll be difficult to most players to climb that high, and a simple crown is the only prize. Either way, it’s helpful that Influenced and Uninfluenced seeds will be distinguished.
