Pathless Woods, an upcoming indie sandbox sim inspired by ancient China, developed by Aniya Games Studio and published by Spiral Up Games, has announced a global playtest for July 27th, 2023.
The playtest will run for one week, beginning July 27th and concluding on August 4th, 2023. Pathless Woods is currently expected to release sometime in 2024. It will be available on PC via Steam, where you can wishlist the game and request access for the playtest.
According to a new post on steam, joining the global playtest will also give players a chance to win a Steam gift card, as thanks for the community’s involvement. For an idea of what playtesters will experience, you can watch the original gameplay trailer on the Spiral Up Games YouTube channel:
Pathless Woods features a lot of traditional sim mechanics, from building structures to farming and harvesting resources. However, its cultural influence is undoubtedly compelling.
The architecture, environment, and threats are very distinguishable, featuring signature pagodas and more. Players will even use Chinese farming techniques, regulating irrigation and temperature. It’s similar to Sengoku Dynasty, which recently set an August release date for Early Access.
There’s also a deeper element of survival in Pathless Woods, as players will have to contend with attacks from Jaer cultists, weathering the elements, and even stabilizing your sanity. The ancient setting won’t just make these more challenging to overcome, but also more interesting to learn.
Unfortunately, it remains unclear just how much content is readily available for playtesters. Pathless Woods’ Steam page hints it will offer different biomes with “each new game”, so it’ll be interesting to see just how varied the settings can be.
