The Last Spell, a tactical indie roguelite from developer Ishtar Games and publisher The Arcade Crew, officially has a board game version. The new tabletop experience is expected to arrive on Kickstarter on May 24th, 2023, according to the official Kickstarter page from project creator Tabula Games.
The Last Spell finally delivered a full 1.0 launch just last month on March 9th, 2023, following nearly two years of Early Access. It’s now available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Here’s the board game announcement from Tabula Games:
The Last Spell has remained very popular since launch, receiving a lot of praise for the density and freedom of its combat system, as well as the brilliant soundtrack. The art design, unique environments, and battles create a genuine sense of desperation and frantic energy.
As a tower defense game, it could very well function just fine as a board game. You can review The Last Spell’s backstory and gameplay in a recent launch trailer from the Ishtar Games YouTube channel:
Surprisingly, there are already a lot of differences to glean from the Kickstarter page description and imagery. That’s because they are quite glaring, including a shift into cooperative multiplayer and the phrase “rogue-like”.
In The Last Spell video game, players have the option to level up and upgrade. There are some serious drawbacks to the roguelike genre, which is far more punishing and less accessible, particularly for a board game.
It’s possible that a tougher approach was used in order to balance out the prospect of multiple players. Otherwise, it may simply be a typo, since roguelite and roguelike are often confused.
Either way, the artwork looks equally gorgeous for the board game, which has already teased some very promising miniatures. These components create more action and immersion in a tabletop experience. The figures seem to be finely detailed, without losing the personality of the source material.
