Tales of Symphonia Remastered, an upcoming remaster of the classic action RPG, has unveiled a new gameplay trailer. Originally released in the early thousands for the Nintendo GameCube, the latest port of Tales of Symphonia will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. It’s scheduled to launch on February 17th, 2023.
It’s nice to have a better look at what fans should expect from actual gameplay, since the game’s recent release date trailer from November didn’t showcase very much. The enhanced graphics promised by the Bandai Namco product page look very pretty in today’s trailer, but fans have been fairly divided about the upcoming remaster.
Firstly, the frame rate has been a big concern. It would’ve been nice to see a next-gen release too, which would surely invite 60 FPS in addition to other interesting features like haptic feedback. But apparently that would have been reaching.
Tales of Symphonia has consistently received strong praise, which is especially surprising for such a late installment in the Tales series. If any game deserved a little more attention than it’s getting, it’s this one.
Still, “improved gameplay” is expected from the new remaster, so hopefully it’ll turn out to be a superior version of the PlayStation 3 port. Bandai Namco has been pretty vague about what changes fans will see, but today’s trailer does show off some familiar mechanics for comparison.
Tales of Symphonia has been remastered before, so the newest port really needs to justify its existence. Otherwise, Bandai Namco is essentially recycling an existing port. Players are more interested in a direct port from the Nintendo GameCube, which may have been a short-lived console but delivered more than a few beloved titles.
