The Unliving, an upcoming horror-themed roguelite RPG, has officially been delayed. Publisher Team17 cites that the game was intended to add a “new feature”, which wouldn’t have been successfully completed in time.

Originally slated for early access to launch on October 31st, 2022, the game will now be available on November 7th, 2022. Here’s the full statement from Team17:

The Unliving has relied heavily on its elements of fantasy horror, to the point that today’s apology acknowledges how unfortunate it is for the title to miss Halloween. Countless titles are capitalizing on the holiday, even those which are far removed from horror. However, a frustrating experience on launch would be even worse, so it’s always best to play it safe with your fans.

The Unliving lets players assume a somewhat villainous role as Necromancers, mostly using destruction to achieve your goals. But it still has a playful and gory tone, so there’s a unique charm in this title. In fact, there’s partly a sense of underlying humor, though it isn’t so forthright as something like Cult of the Lamb.

Although retro is both practical and trendy for indie games, The Unliving seems to have done just enough to distinguish itself. It’s got a decent hook, sort of letting players experience an RPG from an antagonist’s point of view, splashy visuals and interesting combat.

Team17 has published more than a few hits, such as the popular Overcooked series. More recently, they championed the soulslike hit Thymesia, which received mixed reviews from critics, but continues to retain high praise from the actual playerbase.

So, players should have faith in The Unliving, and it’ll be interesting to find out what the new feature was, given that it was important enough to delay the game.
