The Knight Witch, a hand-drawn metroidvania from developer Super Mega Team and publisher Team17, has just announced that a physical Deluxe Edition will be available on May 23rd, 2023. The Deluxe Edition will include a physical copy, art cards, downloadable soundtrack, and reversible inlay. Here’s the full tweet from publisher Team17’s feed, with a closer look at the contents:

The Knight Witch is a compelling mash-up of genres. It allows players to lean into deck-building mechanics with spell cards, or weapons to make the game feel more like a bullet hell. Remarkably, each of these concepts are successful for the most part. It’s an ambitious game, aside from the stunning art design.

The hand-drawn environments and characters really pop with a colorful and creative style. There is a distinguishable, tactile nature to hand-drawn games that can’t be mistaken.

And although certain things can feel a little generic, each scene has interesting layers of depth. As a result, the art cards that come with the Deluxe Edition are probably more worthwhile than usual, however obligatory they are. The reversible inlay is a particular win, since the close-up artwork is so finely detailed and playful.

The Knight Witch is a very friendly game, but not just in its visuals. The devs carefully allowed multiple ways for players to enjoy the gameplay loop or adjust the difficulty experience. They had to delay The Knight Witch back in November, but at this point, most of its serious technical issues have been resolved, so it’s a fairly accessible indie.

The game simply makes the most of its theme, pairing it with unexpected genres and gorgeous artwork. It’s a shame there isn’t a more unique collectible in the Deluxe Edition, but the game certainly deserves a physical copy.
