The Thaumaturge, an upcoming RPG with dark fantasy elements from developer Fool’s Theory and publisher 11 bit studios, has just released its first gameplay reveal. The Thaumaturge does not have a release window yet, but it will be available on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. Here’s the full gameplay reveal trailer from The Thaumaturge’s official YouTube channel:
The Thaumaturge was only just announced a few days ago, so it’s nice to move ahead so quickly. The announcement trailer was a stylish cinematic, with some great atmosphere and settings, but gameplay is what should really win over curious fans of the genre.
There was more of a Lovecraftian mystery and dread in the cinematic, while today’s trailer seems to lean towards a traditional dark fantasy RPG. The turn-based combat is on full display too, and that can be a little less accessible than real-time action. However, it also looks to be driven by the story.
The Thaumaturge has placed a heavy emphasis on narrative and characterization. Each trailer has ended with the tease that “everyone has their own demons”, hinting the game will be more of an intimate tale than a sprawling adventure.
There are some solid creature designs in both of the new trailers. Their descriptions were slightly revealed today, which further reinforce how seriously the game is going to take its themes. Aside from the environment, of course, which is ripe for moral ambiguity with such an emphasis on cultural variety.
Overall, The Thaumaturge has tremendous potential, since its compelling premise and setting should fuel the emphasis on storytelling. If it succeeds on PC, it’d be great to hear about plans for multi-platform support.
