Alone in the Dark, developer Pieces Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic’s upcoming reimagining of the 90’s horror survival classic from developer, will get a spotlight later this week on May 25th, 2023.
While exact details haven’t been confirmed, the spotlight is expected to answer “some of the most pressing questions”. Scheduled for 5 PM pacific time, fans can check out the spotlight on THQ Nordic’s official Twitch or YouTube channels.
Alone in the Dark doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, but it will be available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The upcoming spotlight was announced alongside a teaser, mostly featuring cinematics with a brief glimpse of gameplay:
Alone in the Dark is a horror staple and trailblazer, so although the franchise has been absent for a surprisingly long time, there are certainly still plenty of fans. The emphasis on puzzles and survival wasn’t just a novel approach, but effectively made, and the original still holds up.
Following the sour taste left from Alone in the Dark: Illumination, expectations for THQ Nordic’s reimagining probably weren’t very high. But today’s trailer looks very promising. The graphics may not be especially sharp just yet, but there’s a distinct understanding of the necessary imagery and atmosphere.
The series really lost its way as it struggled to evolve, implementing new genres and partly straying from the psychological elements. But the new title’s Steam page stresses just how much it will “return to the roots”.
The shadowy mystery of today’s trailer does reinforce that, with a compelling green color scheme and details that sell the claustrophobia of the classic haunted mansion. So, cautious optimism just might be warranted.
