Don Duality, an upcoming gangster tycoon game from developer Königsborgs and publisher Ravenage Games, has just released a brand-new gameplay trailer. A release window has not been confirmed yet, but it’s expected to launch this year, and you can wishlist the game now on Steam. Here’s the new trailer from Ravenage Games:
Don Duality has a very quirky sense of humor, which could make it hit or miss for some players. The bluntness, coarseness, and general criminal theme already seem naturally amusing though. The contrast of the simple and retro art design really fits the comedy, too. This kind of environment is often taken quite seriously.
The novelty is similar to Definitely Not Fried Chicken, another comedic indie that asked players to operate a criminal enterprise, which we reviewed a couple of weeks ago.
However, behind all of Don Duality’s oddities, the mechanics themselves are fairly creative. Combining card and tycoon mechanics is a sound idea. It should add more of a strategic feel to it, rather than just resource management or worker placement.
Those are still fun mechanics all on their own. But feeling tactical should be key in a game inspired by the gangster genre, where popular movies and shows like The Godfather, Goodfellas and The Sopranos have made it clear how complex and punishing that line of work can be.
Granted, the mechanics in today’s trailer seem a little straightforward. But there are a variety of responsibilities, including “random events” like fire supervision, so the juggling act should be fun.
Publisher Ravenage Games recently announced their support for roguelike Mega City Police, another edgy indie game packed with personality. Hopefully, their partnership with Königsborgs helps the small dev team expand.
