War Robots: Frontiers, the online multiplayer mech shooter from developer Pixonic and publisher MY.GAMES, has just released a dev diary exploring the new Elimination Update. The update will finally let players squad up together, smart pings, a new game mode and more. It rolls out tomorrow, March 2nd, 2023.
War Robots: Frontiers launched into Early Access in November 2022. It’s available on PC, PlayStation or Xbox. Here’s the new dev diary from War Robots: Frontiers‘ official YouTube channel:
War Robots: Frontiers lines up with the mecha gameplay style of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, with stocky and tank-like machines rather than Titanfall or traditional super robots like Microids’ upcoming title UFO Robot Grendizer – The Feast of the Wolves.
Tomorrow’s Elimination Update should help War Robots: Frontiers compete with that kind of fluid movement and mainstream appeal. Teaming up with your friends is a fundamental feature of multiplayer shooters, so its absence has been very noticeable, even for Early Access.
Fortunately, it’s arriving with the terrific Ping System too, popularized by FTP shooter Apex Legends. Pings allow swift communication that cut through messy audio or overlapping shouts. It has also kept players from having to talk online, which often helps subdue toxicity.
The titular Elimination Mode is an interesting twist on familiar TDM gameplay, where it actually rewards players for survival instead of aggression. This should invite players to play with a little more strategy, and punishing some overconfident gameplay.
The fresh weapons and robots are obligatory additions, but they’re promising, nonetheless. Mostly, it has been a delight to see War Robots: Frontiers evolve through Early Access. A full launch has strong potential, since the content as is already feels creative and impressive, especially for a smaller title.
